My mother was one of the most fabulous pianists around. She was not only an accomplished classical pianist, but an amazing Gospel pianist, as well. For as long as I can remember, my mother was a working pianist. She began to teach privately when I was in high school and grew a studio of over 60 students in very little time.
Obviously, she taught me a few things. I wish I had learned more from her.
While I am comfortable with a variety of methods, I tend to stick with a few that are ”tried and true”. I do work with each student individually to find the best method. I have students studying John Thompson’s Method, the Royal Conservatory of Music and the American Contemporary Method. Everyone is encouraged to perform in our recitals.
I am very proud of my piano students who have ranged in age from 3 to, well, adult.
I also love to see students use their skills in the Church and encourage them to play for their own Church whenever possibe. St. Mark’s, additionally, has been very welcoming to the students and several have presented music during regular or special services. Many of our students will one day be the musicians or worship leaders in our Churches. It is good to raise them up now in the way they should go.
